Appleseed

I’m sure that most people who have seen/read Masamune Shirow’s Ghost in the Shell and/or remember reading 80s manga might also have a recollection of his other work, Appleseed. It’s rather similar in theme and style to the former, but its female lead, Deunan, has better fitting costumes that have the added bonus of actually looking like something a soldier would wear in a war zone:

But of course, because it’s a Shirow work, it also features scenes where her costume (and other characters) is of the Unrealistically Tight but “Still Sexy” variety as well as spine benders and crotch huggers:

The new anime reboots (going from Appleseed XIII, Ex Machina, and Alpha) have chronologically progressed from mostly keeping her original costume intact to “I give thee a cleavage window, a bared midriff, and a set of completely pointless suspenders and corset thing because fuck you”.

And speaking of Alpha

I’m sure that not even vacuum sealing yourself into that monstrosity would be enough to explain where a human waist goes or why a butt has to lifted so damn high.

If I wasn’t told it was a costume, I would have assumed the figure on the left was some sort of humanoid robot.

I can certainly understand why they want to get rid of the 80s hair, that’s a tad dated.  But I really don’t think that this is really an improvement:

Which probably explains Deunan’s expressions in all the promo shots:

Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright isn’t a combat game but I’m disclosing that it has some of my favourite storylines and character designs from all the games I’ve ever played. That being said, there’s one woman in particular:

image

Her English name is Foxy, and she is the only female member of a group of knights guarding Labyrinthia’s clock tower. She is depicted as a vain and rather spoiled woman who is much more concerned about her hair staying bouncy and her steel stilettos not getting muddy instead of her guard duties with the Vigilantes. She has two male groupies whose names are Servius and Treddon – in-game you even a demonstration of a footprint of hers on the back of his armour.

It’s a shame because the standard knight’s armour looks pretty cool.

But I guess they decided on a Certain Amount of In-Game Sexiness…and this was way after a character named Olivia Aldente explained and justified her midriff baring chef’s uniform despite handling sharp knives and boiling water in the kitchen.

It’s particularly disappointing not just for the adherence to painfully sexist tropes but because ornamental armor can actually be really amazing.

Why would anyone want to wear an ugly boobplate bikini when they would parade around in a work of art?
