World of Warcraft (the Movie)

I don’t know if you’d seen these already but my eyes just rolled into the back of my head. Thanks for the crotch shot.

And of course the male equivalent is the opposite of sexualised.

Those posters sum up PERFECTLY the problem with gendered double standard in depicting fictional characters and how it traverses through various media, as an MMO gets adapted into a movie.

Everything about those characters that should be equal, isn’t: makeup, costume, posing.

@nicholaskole took notice way back of how male orcs are big and unequivocally monstrous, while female ones are just conventionally pretty ladies painted green with small fangs (and that Garona’s mixed ancestry is not given justice either). Basically this:

Also reminds me strongly of @krudman’s take on sexual dimorphism in character design.

We assure you, WoW the Movie, designing big badass orc women (and/or sexualized orc men) isn’t that hard! We have a couple examples in our orc tag.

edit: A number of people have rushed to remind us that in according to the character’s particular lore, she’s a half orc.  While correct, this doesn’t address any of the key problems such as her pose and attire, that audiences unfamiliar with the lore won’t know that or that the character is essentially promoted as a sexy orc-like lady in juxtaposition to a powerful, well protected and dangerous orc man.

I don’t draw fantasy much but I figured I need to do some for like portfolios n shit. It’s not properly finished but I’m too tired to check all the edges. So I used armour from Norton Armouries where my boyfriend works (and I’ve worked at a few times) so it’s real armour that you can buy, link below. Since it’s a female orc I though I’d tag in @bikiniarmorbattledamage since it’s non-bikini-semi-sensible armour for an orc which they sometimes like to post instead of the bad stuff. I added beads to the hair cos she likes to accessorise and aint afraid to be feminine.

Lady orc warriors that don’t look just like supermodels painted green (or blue) are always welcome on BABD, especially when they wear non-sexualized armor (or, at the very least, are equally empowered across all genders)!

This piece also shows the importance of using real armor as reference.
And while she would score some bingo points for having bits of skin uncovered, what’s crucial about that character is how non-objectified her design is.

Thank you for tagging us, @chrissieblog!

Nords: Heroes of the North* would be a really nice-looking game… if the artists were allowed to put the same kind of effort into female characters as the male ones.

While men have consistently cartoonish proportions and interestingly stylized wardrobes, women fall squarely into the standard of conventionally pretty and thin models clad in bikini armors.

Here’s how male and female orc designs compare:

image

Also why is this blue-skinned monstrous race generically named orcs and not Jotun, the frost giants? That would give the game more genuine nordic flare and some unique identity.

Much needed identity, considering their elves look like lifted straight from WoW:

Not surprisingly, this title comes from a repeat offender: Plarium, the publisher behind such creatively marketed games as Stormfall and Sparta the War of Empires.

If it’s of any consolation, I found one (1!) lady with design priorities similar to the male characters (at least body type-wise):

Well that’s some impressive female viking. Now give her a proper armor and she’d be almost as awesome as Thora from JotunAlmost.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – the bikini armored warrrior woman riding an arctic beast trope reached it’s apex in 1990.  Just let it go guys, and take comfort in knowing that no matter what you did, it could never have been more awesome than an ad for Schnapps.

*Nords of North, redundant much?

Zalath by HystericalMellotron

I was watching some funny parodies in the internet the other day, about skimpy female “armors” (chainmail bikini!) in videogames and etc.  and I felt like making fun of this trope too…hence his vulgar, over-the-top costume. Well, maaaaaybe it doesn’t look that stupid, but it was meant to >_>

Bloody Sunset by HystericalMellotron

[Zalath] in the middle of a battle between demon elfs and a tribe of exclusively female orcs. The reason he’s fighting in such a ridiculous pose it’s because this is meant to be a genderbent parody of ads for fantasy games in general.
They tend to show fairly often women in bb pose using arrows and other long-ranged weapons against enemies in close combat LOL

A double feature of a single character’s empowerment 😀

Zalath is truly a rolemodel to numerous other male warriors who don’t know what are appropriate clothes and poses for a man to take into battle!
He could team up with Prince Obiect and his friends in a quest of teaching everyone what a real sexy hero looks like.
