Tidy Up Tuesday #13

After a week off, here are some recent tidy-ups:

Our blog has tags for reference and resources on armor (especially positive female armor).

For those of you who are additionally looking for body type reference for their character design, this tag on art-and-sterf is pretty decent, as is that one on @artist-refs.

We still can not offer design critiques. However, an affiliated blog devoted to that is in the works currently, we’ll let you guys know when it emerges.

We do not have backgrounds where we are comfortable giving out advice regarding attire specific to particular cultures and/or religions.

Oh, and reminder that there’s that part in our FAQ, in case anyone jumps in to say we don’t like fun because we’re so critical.

Tidy Up Tuesday #12

This week tidying-up:

To anyone who says BABD is shaming women who like to dress their female game characters in skimpy gear: we challenge you to find a single post where we say that. Go, look it up! We’ll wait.

When submitting, please remember that this blog’s primary concern is warrior costume design. Art where contorted anatomy, not the costume, is the problem is more appropriate as a submission to @eschergirls.

Inquiries covered before on the blog:

Tidy-Up Tuesday #11

This week’s recurring concerns:

If we make a bingo or approve a submitted one that doesn’t hit all the right squares, PLEASE, instead of replying/reblogging/commenting about the supposed mistakes keep in mind that:

Feel free to submit your art and characters as positive examples (or suggest them as a reblog, if you have the art on your blog already)!

That said, sadly we can not offer design critiques on personal art.

Tidy-Up Tuesday #10

Covering this week:

When submitting a post, please provide the source and at the very least some commentary, not just a bare image.

Over time, our old Warframe post received lots of conflicting responses on whether or not in-story Tenno (the entities that use warframe armor) have gender. Or if the armors themselves have gender.

We really don’t see how that would matter, seeing as some warframes clearly have gendered design via boobs, while the closest equivalent to a crotch bulge looks scary, angular and seems to be made of carapace.

Regarding why some companies can manage to instruct their artists to avoid particular content to make their product more marketable to a particular region – but only seem to selectively apply them – it has to do with their style guides and artistic direction.

Ultimately creative/art directors are the ones who are able to decide when to follow the rules and when to make an exception.  (And Creepy Marketing Guy)

Things we discussed before that were brought to us recently:

Tidy-Up Tuesday #9

This week’s tidy-ups:

pyranova , the original poster of last week’s throwback, asked us to give Dr. Nerdlove, the site that posted the original article, a shout-out. The post itself was an excerpt from a second article in the site’s long-running series of writeups about male privilege (parts: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7).

Dr.Nerdlove in general is a site worth acquainting oneself with, rife with good advice for the socially awkward and critical of many social problems which are still rarely challenged among the geek community.

A reader asked what would we say to a woman who wants to cosplay Quiet.

We’d say Go for it, you beautiful lady! Unlike Quiet, you are a human and make your own choices! We admire the craft, ingenuity and confidence that goes into cosplaying scantily clad characters.”

We’ve been also asked to post more about Pokemon. Unfortunately (or rather, fortunately), unlike with Digimon, we can not find a way to connect the franchise to our blog’s topic.
