Benimaru Nikaido disempowered

@puppyinatophat submitted:

So I noticed you guys discussed King of Fighters XIV’s latest trailers and there was something that I feel you missed in your discussion.

Benimaru’s design change. They had a perfectly “empowered” character, and they take that away from him.

This was his pre XIV design (in game shots too):

(KOF 94)

(KOF 2000)

(KOF XI)

And now this is look in the latest game:

How could they? Taking away his empowerment like that? Expecting a man to fight in simple street clothes when he could be showing off his intimidating abs.

(Also, for those wondering about his hair, he has electricity powers and keeps hair out of his eyes by using static electricity to push it up. He’s also a very very inspired by the Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure character Polnareff.)

(Trailer showing Benimaru in King of Fighters XIV here

I would like to call for a solemn moment of silence, for this poor soul so had his empowerment stripped of him. (If you would like to press F to pay your respects, I’ve checked and it’s not a Tumblr hotkey so you’re safe to do.)

Benimaru, you are being failed by the people who should have been there to protect you.  I’m so sorry.

Benimaru has all the traits of someone who should have been protected.  He’s a fighting game character (not Street Fighter but still), he’s got fabulous hair, delicious abs and a love of teasingly revealing outfits.  But, when the time came where were the “creative freedom” crowds?  Who came forward to speak on this Benimaru’s behalf to speak of this fictional character’s important personal preferences?

image

No one.  Benimaru was counting on these people to protect him (or would have if he wasn’t a fictional character).  His empowerment has been stripped away without so much as a word of complaint by The Guardians.

So King of Fighters XIV is breaking out the trailers… while it does promise over 50 characters no word yet on whether any of them will be Blue Mary

Regardless, the theme of guys in impressive thematic suits and girls in sexy outfits (some lacking all practicality) seems to be staying with the series.

Yeah.

Blue Mary (Fatal Fury, King of Fighters)

Morrigan submitted:

So this is her original design in Fatal Fury 3:

image

And this is her design in The King of Fighters XI (2006/2007):

image

Other than the silly extra belt (lol why), it’s an otherwise really decent outfit for a fighter woman, and it looks cool too.

But now behold true horror, her design in KoF: Maximum Impact Regulation A (2007):

image

In-game model:

image

I… can’t. I just can’t. There is so much wrong with everything in the design, absurd goofy hair and pigeon toed pose being the least of the problems. WTF?

Poor Mary…

Now, for further context – one of the other main characters in Fatal Fury 3 was Mai Shiranui.  So, rather predictably – Mary was also given a painful boob bounce animation:

image

So I’m pretty sure if she was meant to be a T&A fest she wouldn’t have been issued with pants, a sentimental leather jacket and a motorcycle:

image

How they went from this to well… some sort of 80s nightmare soft-core porn tragedy outfit for her is truly a great mystery, particularly since they only made this change one year after the previous game.

And the saddest part is, that may well have been Blue Mary’s last appearance since we haven’t seen any new King of Fighters games and was apparently so embarrassing that SNK’s own site doesn’t want to talk about it. (No seriously)

Let this be a warning to all creators.

Mai Shiranui doesn’t really score that high on bingo, but is still important for the fact that she takes “no pants” and “no breast support” to astounding levels.

image

And yes… her doing this thing of looking like she’s pushing the back of her costume away to give a show to anyone behind her that it’s been picked up on by fan artists and cosplayers.

image

This is why we can’t have nice things.
