I can’t help but notice a slight change in tone the covers of book one and book three. Did they really decide that by book three they would have already got the interest of everyone wanting to read a story of colonial atrocities and instead focus on the “looking for sexy lady butts” crowds?
For some reason this makes me worry about the integrity of their storytelling and the level of respect they’ll be giving the weighty matter of the Conquistador invasion of the Aztec Empire.

We’ve talked before about how the only people who really understand localization decisions are the people who make them, but this one does make me genuinely curious if someone told them “If you have a sexy lady on the cover, you need a dude with no shirt or else they’ll say its sexist”.
I know it wasn’t they realized the outfit was ridiculous, because six months later they released this cover.

So, apparently they decided to make a Dark Souls comic – which is awesome. However the company they chose to adapt it to comic format is Titan, the people who brought us:
- 13 Coins
- Marada the She Wolf
- Monster Madness (which is probably overdue a feature on BABD)
- A whole bunch of adaptations from television
Now, presumably they received a lot of information such as source materials, concept art, etc but still took it upon themselves to give their heroine a ridiculous boobplate.
It’s impossible to even look into this matter without finding imagery that is both amazingly preposterous, and yet also perfect “reaction” images to the situation.
So what should have been a great positive example is now a cautionary tale about how even great properties can slide into ridiculous female armor territory as they expand markets.
