Blue Mary (Fatal Fury, King of Fighters)

So this is her original design in Fatal Fury 3:

And this is her design in The King of Fighters XI (2006/2007):

Other than the silly extra belt (lol why), it’s an otherwise really decent outfit for a fighter woman, and it looks cool too.

But now behold true horror, her design in KoF: Maximum Impact Regulation A (2007):

image

In-game model:

image

I… can’t. I just can’t. There is so much wrong with everything in the design, absurd goofy hair and pigeon toed pose being the least of the problems. WTF?

Poor Mary…

Now, for further context – one of the other main characters in Fatal Fury 3 was Mai Shiranui.  So, rather predictably – Mary was also given a painful boob bounce animation:

image

So I’m pretty sure if she was meant to be a T&A fest she wouldn’t have been issued with pants, a sentimental leather jacket and a motorcycle:

image

How they went from this to well… some sort of 80s nightmare soft-core porn tragedy outfit for her is truly a great mystery, particularly since they only made this change one year after the previous game.

And the saddest part is, that may well have been Blue Mary’s last appearance since we haven’t seen any new King of Fighters games and was apparently so embarrassing that SNK’s own site doesn’t want to talk about it. (No seriously)

Let this be a warning to all creators.

Appleseed

I’m sure that most people who have seen/read Masamune Shirow’s Ghost in the Shell and/or remember reading 80s manga might also have a recollection of his other work, Appleseed. It’s rather similar in theme and style to the former, but its female lead, Deunan, has better fitting costumes that have the added bonus of actually looking like something a soldier would wear in a war zone:

But of course, because it’s a Shirow work, it also features scenes where her costume (and other characters) is of the Unrealistically Tight but “Still Sexy” variety as well as spine benders and crotch huggers:

image
image

The new anime reboots (going from Appleseed XIII, Ex Machina, and Alpha) have chronologically progressed from mostly keeping her original costume intact to “I give thee a cleavage window, a bared midriff, and a set of completely pointless suspenders and corset thing because fuck you”.

And speaking of Alpha

image

I’m sure that not even vacuum sealing yourself into that monstrosity would be enough to explain where a human waist goes or why a butt has to lifted so damn high.

If I wasn’t told it was a costume, I would have assumed the figure on the left was some sort of humanoid robot.

I can certainly understand why they want to get rid of the 80s hair, that’s a tad dated.  But I really don’t think that this is really an improvement:

Which probably explains Deunan’s expressions in all the promo shots:

This Dragon’s Crown Statue Is Freaking Me Out

@ajhasaplan submitted:

Front page of Kotaku.

What in the shit.

image

The history of this Dragon’s Crown statue is a wild ride that keeps on going.  Originally it appears it was unlicensed, then it was licensed for an exhibition and limited release only within Japan in 2013. And when the world saw how the stylized Amazon looked like when she was represented as something three dimensional, they were horrified.

Now apparently the figure is going to be given a second shot – no word on if they’ll be selling this outside of Japan.  But the article provides a pretty great summary of how opinions have warmed:

image

But really what I love about this statue is that it highlights just how limiting this kind of character design is.  It’s not horrifying because they’ve departed from the original design principles, it’s horrifying because in a 3D form that encourages examination – it’s no longer shielded by distraction and the expectation of acceptance due to it’s dependence on tropes.

image

Seriously, nothing about this design was ever anything less than horrifying – it’s just (poorly) concealed behind distractions and rhetoric about it being some sort of statement about the fantasy adventure genre.

image

Seriously whether it’s the question of where does the rest of her body go, or what is happening with her “armor” everyone one of these action shots is a moment of horror in the making.
