Hello Diablo my old friend.

They recently announced the latest class, the rogue, with a bizarre trailer and an even more bizarre costume as the iconic look which seems to try to hedge in a few ideas in bizarre contradiction.

  • An Assassin’s Creed style hood without any cape attached
  • Two part thigh highs that are cloth from the top of the calf up

But of course, they have most of the classics as well.

  • A Xena style combat corset with pauldrons and bracers, but no pants or helmet
  • Extremely high profile, attention grabbing outfit for someone who supposedly pick pockets and moves unseen
  • Combat style is sexy dancing with knives

Also, while she does look ambiguously brown in the final videos and character model… it seems pretty clearly this was a last minute decision based off the concept art.

Because brown women apparently need more media depicting them as morally bankrupt sexy thieves… according to Blizzard.

So I would like to take this opportunity to draw attention to this quote from November 2014, regarding Blizzard’s intentions with another game.

They really need to stop getting celebrated for talking the talk while they do the opposite of walking the walk.

Swords of Divinity is a game by an asset flipper (actually the one featured in the video) and while they have unspectacular in pretty much everything else, they really managed to make a spectacularly bad design here.

And yes, that is an Archer with what looks like a terribly designed crossbow.

So, as exciting as it is that from time to time, Blizzard makes progress in their newest product: Overwatch – I am still more than a little bit bothered that this is the image of a “hunter” that they put forward on their World of Warcraft site.

The game has been updated that much that people are now trying to run bootleg “original build” servers, and they’ve never gotten some better character art for this class than this.

They gave her light armor, appropriate for a small archer:chainmail, an arm brace, chest plate, and a light skirt she can easily run around murderizing dudes in the face in

her hair is also only loose in the promo pictures because Susan is fucking busy not dying because her hair was flying into her eyeballs so she braids that shit back

her mail shirt is also loose enough that it doesn’t impede her arm movements it’s almost like she’s dressed for a fight wow

I like the pinks and purples under her bitchin as hell leather armor here, because you don’t have to be masculine to shoot someone in the goddamn face

I feel it’s a worrying statement about the state of media when a movie set in a universe where wardrobes can literally be trans-dimensional portals for the sake of narrative convenience has one of the better examples of making fantasy female armor that is styled around something other than sex appeal.

Because while one could, if really determined, pick out all the points by which this armor is not “really functional” the fact is that it does convey a sense of readiness and being larger than life… without resorting to the usual tropes.

Tidy Up Tuesday #17

We would like to kindly remind all our fans and readers that BABD (as well as many of its related blogs, especially @eschergirls) focuses on criticizing commercial artwork made by industry professionals.

We encourage everyone interested in doing similar critique to ours to not bash on amateur/hobbyist/fan content. 

For-profit indie projects, though, while they’re not as mainstream as AAA studios, are not free from criticism.

It appears Ubisoft has recognized the awesome of Evie Frye and the first Assassin’s Creed Syndicate DLC focuses on her going up against Jack the Ripper.

The fact that some archers use asymmetrical breast straps and that mythical Amazons (supposedly!) cut off one breast for better aim with the bow, doesn’t really change how badly designed is Phoebe’s half-boobplate in Indivisible!
