Tidy Up Tuesday #57

A few things to tidy up here, a lot of them having to do with For Honor

Since the armor is a bit complicated and there’s a lot of feedback, there will be at least one more post on the differences and design decisions.  It will take a little time to assemble though.

Firstly though, thank you for the many submissions we’ve been receiving lately, with our diminished posting schedule it’s hard to keep but we have some great user-submitted posts we want to share soon.

Back to For Honor (and other games): The world presented by the game devs is at least as much a part of the game as the player customization screen.

Gender select on most of the classes does not erase how the game itself presents gender such as, for example, refers to armies as “these men” or when the game presents suspicious dismorphism as standard.

Having a skin tone slider that allows your character to be the only brown person in the world (and somehow unnoticed for it) doesn’t make a game above criticism for diversity issues.

If you believe that cultural and ethnic diversity is a relatively new thing and so it’s fine when it’s absent in fantasy, then we strongly encourage you to check out the plethora of material available on @medievalpoc ( facebook | twitter )

If you would like to learn more about issues relating to diversity we strongly recommend checking out and supporting:

For other issues relating to feedback we’ve gotten on the For Honor posts, as I said a post is coming but some related posts are:

(And if you’re still stressing out, remember it is listed as a positive example, however we pointed out issues with it. BABD is a critic blog and no product is ever perfect. Not even our favourites.)

You may have noticed our posting schedule isn’t quite a regular as it used to be – that’s due to a combination of factors but in order to address it we’ll be aiming for one post per day for a while rather than our usual two.

We thank you for your understanding.

Tidy Up Tuesday #55

Been a while since we’ve done a tidy up.

We do try to keep our posts brief and primarily focus on costume and character design for female characters – since focusing on every aspect of many designs and companies could literally take pages and pages.

If you’re interested in other issues of representation we highly recommend checking out the following blogs:

We also recommend checking out our related sites.

A few things to tidy up this week:

Our tag cloud is courtesy of Post-Theory.

For those of you arguing that the guys in Final Fantasy XV are equally sexualized and objectified as Cindy: I hate to break it to you but you’re clearly getting it confused with Final Fantasy XIV.

If you have written an article, column, etc for somewhere else but you want to share it and you’re free to do you may absolutely submit it (or a link to the original publishing if it’s online and accessible).

This week:

Don’t forget to participate in our Overwatch Halloween costume design contest! The deadline is this Sunday, 20 November!

Fabulous prizes await!

Re: name dropping Dragon’s Crown as an example of a failed satire/commentary in the most recent throwback – the game’s art director admited his designs pushed for cartoonish exaggerations, implying it’s supposed to be a comedic take on the conventional fantasy character design.

Just a few things to catch up on this week:

A thank you to those who’ve already submitted exciting entries for the Overwatch Halloween competition.

The competition is open until November 20 and we encourage people of all skill levels to participate!

Clearing things up this week:

Since apparently there’s a lot of confusion (as in – lack of reading comprehension) in notes under the Symmetra follow up post; for the record: Blizzard are the ones saying that the feedback and the stats mean Symmetra is currently nonviable

Detailed rules for our Halloween contest, including the deadline (Nov 20), are available on this subpage

We encourage everyone, despite artistic skill, to take part in the competition. As long as artwork is finished, readable and within the contest rules, it’s totally eligible for a win! We’re intending to judge creative ideas, not skill levels of the contestants. Good luck!

Some notices to catch up on

Rose of Winter got greenlit recently and is pending release!

We do look forward to featuring it on BABD’s Steam Curator page!

Before submitting/messaging us, please check with the search bar whether we touched of the subject already.

Sadly no, Haydee is not a joke (or a satire) – the developer stands by it and so do it’s fans.  If you’re interested in seeing just how lifeless the game is, we recommend watching Jim Sterling play it. (ht: @red-queen-on-the-heathen-throne)

Longer tidy up after two weeks:

Rose of Winter’s playable DEMO (with music by Undertale’s Toby Fox) is here! Check it out to see how it’s worth all the support on Steam Greenlight!

While lack of helmet isn’t realistically a good thing for armor design (and often gets used as a tool of gendered double standards – hence it’s on the bingo), we do not think an otherwise positive example should be considered ruined or invalid because of it.

Don’t feel shy to send us a redraw/redesign of bad armor, we’d be happy to have it among positive examples!

When submitting a bingo to BABD, mark it however you want, even in MS Paint. Ozzie, for example, uploads blank card to her sta.sh and scribbles on it with deviantArt Muro – feel free to do the same if you have dA account.

Oh, and for those who are still enraged at our male empowerment tag – remember that avoiding it is as easy as not following our blog.  Avoiding similar examples with female characters is as simple as traversing to an alternative reality or moving to another planet.
