Tidy Up Tuesday #33

Just a few things to tidy up this week.

We do indeed have a Steam Curator page, it’s been a little quiet lately but hopefully will start making some recommendations again soon.  Also the related Steam Group.

In creating fiction, particularly set outside of our own society, and considering who would and wouldn’t be fit to fight, we recommend considering many, many factors other than sex or gender.

For those who heard about, but didn’t follow the Overwatch pose debaccle – in a predictably Blizzard manner the “check out my butt” pose was replaced with a different “check out my butt” pose lifted directly from a Billy De Vorss 1950s pinup.  Blizzard once again claiming to strive for progress while sitting still.

Our master post on the “but dudes are sexualized the same way” and why they really are not.

Just a few things to tidy up this week.

We do frequently discover things that we enjoyed or looked forward to enjoying are problematic to varying degrees.  Whether it can still be enjoyed afterwards is up to individuals and circumstances though we do ask that you not feel guilty about enjoying it if you do, don’t create excuses for them or deny their problems.

If you find that you cannot enjoy it due to the problems, that’s also completely understandable and you shouldn’t feel guilty about that either.  Though depending on the options available you may consider voicing your dissatisfaction as a customer to the creators if you feel comfortable doing so (and they haven’t addressed it or improved since).

This week tidy-ups and news:

Scarlet Blade is about to close down, joining the collection of retired projects that prove “sex sell” as a poor marketing strategy (probably even moreso than others, cause this game was at least delivering on nippleless boobs its ads promised).

We’re planning to devote one last bingo to one of Scarlet Blade “armors” as a sendoff. Feel free to suggest which one shall we choose!

A message to our followers:

Please don’t automatically feel guilty about liking media with gratuitous sexy stuff (like, say, bikini armors) in it. Just openly acknowledge it has problems and do not excuse them, even if they supposedly “make sense” in-universe. Also, please be respectful and understanding to those people for whom these problems are deal breakers of enjoyment.

As for the issue of whether or not to financially support problematic media, that’s always an individual choice that everyone should make for themselves.
Though in special cases of terribadness, we may speak up and advice against a product.

Quick reminder that while BABD is in total support of Magic Meat Week, we are not behind it, thus we can not provide legit information about it. The initiative was created by @amanda-sharpe and organized by @heymonster who runs the official @magicmeatweek blog.

Big tidy up this week, it’s been an exciting seven days!

For those who had queries regarding the racial representation issues: Given both admins are super white, we strongly recommend that you consider looking at and supporting resources by people of color on the topic such as:

Regarding boobs and armor, we’ve covered this before in a few places but it’s probably worth stressing a few points.  From a practical perspective: Armor should never be tight, especially not hard armor like plate. Armor should be roomy enough for you to move in, and have space for padding, dents, etc, and that means it’ll be roomy enough for ample breast support.

If you’re looking for  inspiration, we recommend checking the positive examples tag – you never know what might give you great ideas.  However since someone asks, some of our favorite examples from science fiction are Captain Phasma, the soldiers of XCom, Sharpnel by OmeN2501 and Gloria – sci-fi Jeanne d’Arc by Nicolas Francoeur.

If you’re looking for the worst of the worst, well we recommend checking out the Female Armor Bingo tag – it really depends on how do you want to rate it?

The horrifying thing about female armor design is there are so many ways to the be the worst, and people are always working to pioneer new ones.
