Riders of Icarus Switch

Another victims recipients of our switch treatment, after Saint Seiya Online, were costumes from Riders of Icarus

Guardian

The change was a pretty simple copypaste job, I only adjusted details to better fit other gender’s figure. The lady’s weird incomplete underwear became full pants, the dude’s chin got exposed, so I gave him some lip gloss and goatee to flaunt it more.

As for most crucial difference, the exposed belly and cleavage – in the original the skin looks jarringly different from the armor, as if literally rendered with different engine settings. I decided to preserve the plastic-y look of the flesh to accentuate the guardian’s masculine body. Which, BTW, probably features my best painted abs so far.

Wizard

This one, too, was basically a copypaste job, except that I hated the shiny pants texture, so I drew them in real quick. I also changed both of their hair to not look like Absolute Garbage. The weird… leotard? lingerie? cloth coverings do end up covering basically all of the fun parts of the dude’s torso, and unfortunately, I didn’t give him my patented Semi-Translucent Bulge™. Especially with that sharp ornament pointing right at his crotch. Believe me when I say, I will not make the same mistake in future streams. At least I made sure his coattails didn’t cover his ass.

Overall, it was a fun and laid-back redesign, I think.

This is from a real video game called “Riders of Icarus” and this is what you see during the character select screen. Viewable on many Riders of Icarus review videos that go through character selection screens. These images were obtained from https://www.tentonhammer.com/guides/riders-of-icarus-choosing-a-class

Not only is the double standard very apparent, it’s also extremely inconsistent as well (and of course, 100% illogical because why would a woman wearing full plate reveal MORE than the assassin class??? On top of the, you know, why reveal anything dilemma).

Also, literal bikini armour. LITERAL bikini armour. I can’t…

(Order of classes from top to bottom in captions:

Guardian,

Assassin, Priest, Wizard, Berserker.)

This is the textbookiest of texbook examples of double standard in armor we’ve seen in ages. Amazingly creative

I remember how Riders of Icarus released it’s trailer it almost looked like it wasn’t going to this nonsense… for a literal minute.

You have to love their commitment to the novel idea of wings combing out of the lower legs… then going with the most generically awful female costumes…. short skirts don’t really seem compatible with dragon riding.

For bonus points, this is the first female character you’ll come across on their site if you scroll down through the promo images from the top:

Dear BABD

Please let me share with you a tale of hopes and disappointment, starring Riders of Icarus, by our old mutual friend Nexon.

“Well, that is an interesting looking class. I wonder how it looks on females. It probably has a battle skirt or something.”

image

“Good lord, is that actual full plate? Armored legs and everything?”

image

“Oh. I don’t know what I expected.”

Yours, vonBoomslang

Nexon is such a wild ride, I mean I struggle to understand how the same people publishing Vindictus also publish Dirty Bomb!

Looking at the promotional screenshots for this game, one might easily be tricked into believing that the armor for ladies would not be terrible:

image

I mean it doesn’t look great, but the main issue is the stock-standard boobplate that seems to be mandatory in so many fantasy RPGs these days.  Even the trailer isn’t too bad for the first sixty seconds… then:

Apparently there are still people out there who believe that the MMORPG market is not yet over saturated with this exact same style of double standard nonsense.  Somehow.
