This above is the design of Penelope Pitstop in DC Comics’ upcoming series “Wacky Raceland”. Which is either a gritty reboot of Wacky Races that turns them into Fury Road knock-off…or a parody of such idea, it’s really hard to tell from how little we have right now.

For comparision here is the original cartoon version:

Normally I’d make some sort of witty comment here, but this is just too baffling, words cannot describe it.

You know, it’s kind of impressive – under normal circumstances I’d be pretty okay with a wasteland heroine having a ride like this:

But this is one of the many problem with “gritty reboots” and other re-imaginings of things made for children: They make the female characters “gritty” by sexualizing them to a ridiculous extent.

The guy and the dog up front appear to be Dick Dastardly and Muttley:

In both cases, while their attire was created with intent of making them look intimidating and dangerous… making this a case of a pet receiving more practical attire than a female character.

The Internet is already filled with places where you can find images of characters from your childhood to whack off too – there is no need publish an official comic with imagery like this.  Especially not one where you’re trying to pass every other character off as an actual gritty reboot.

Erik Larsen wants female superhero comics to stop being so “practical,” so we thought we’d help him practice what he preached.

Because if Erik Larsen wants to save comics industry, he should start from his own backyard.

Here are two of my favorite Savage Dragon redesign proposals from the article (more under the link above):

Unfortunately, there is no chance we’ll be ever seeing such glorious costumes in Savage Dragon comics 🙁 Turns out, Larsen is not as keen on taking criticism as he is on giving it.

Speaking of Wonder Woman and professional comic industry artists who actually are her genuine fans, it’s a perfect opportunity to give a shout-out to how Stjepan Sejic depicts her.

Above here, we have not one, not two, but FOUR alternative designs of body-covering armor for Diana; each of them very distinct, while still paying tribute to her traditional costume’s elements.
Big thanks to filipfatalattractionrblog of hellyeahteensuperheroes for referencing those in a reblog from us.

THIS is what I meant on my personal by saying that the new official costume doesn’t really challenge anything and its only change compared to the previous design is the spoulders and a jumpsuit unbeneath.
There are infinite ways to redesign fictional fashion, and when a new design just a superficial fix, it is okay to criticize… as long as you know what you’re talking about, *ahem*JScottCampbell*ahem* >_>

Also worth noting how Mr Sejic usually portrays Wonder Woman’s body. Even in a classic strapless costume, her figure reads as one of an Amazon warrior: tall, bulky and muscular.

As we mentioned before, nebezial is also notable for having a good sense of humor and self-awareness of how the industry treats female characters. It’s no different in case of Diana:

F#$%ing Photoshop indeed.
