In
relation to the “Super Manga Matrix” book, I actually have a fairly
similar book called the “costume matrix” and well… It’s far more helpful
than what I’ve seen of the other book.its
basically the same concept, take a “base” clothing style (school
uniform, military uniform, japanese clothes, gothic/formal, casual,
foreign cultures) and mix it with another base, or with a “motif”
(animal, elements, scifi/mecha, seasons, plants).each section of
the book has one of the bases and combines it, usually showing at least
two designs (in terms of motifs though, there may be more than one
design but they would use something different i.e. having four school
uniform x animal examples but with four different specific animals) so
there’s a little more varietyIt’s
mostly a reference book rather than a “how to draw” and even then they
have a little brainstorming game using web diagrams and word association
to make a designIt’s got absolutely no escher girl posing however they do have a few slightly questionable designs
the worst of the bunch being this girl
it
is combining Military clothing as a base (specifically armor) and a
dragon and they got this. Granted its far better than what I’ve seen of
most womens’ armor(even by the same author) but it is a disappointing
one compared to everything elseI guess what I’m trying to say is, here is the same concept, with better designers
That’s really cool! And it does seem very helpful for brainstorming, especially since they show you a variety of combinations and bases!
The dragon armor amuses me, but I do like how the dragon design wraps around her, even if it’s bikini armor x3
Thanks for sharing!
Sigh, even in a practical interesting book that helps with costume design there had to be a physics-denying bikini armor, huh?
What upsets me the most is that this book’s idea works basically the same as @dogbomber‘s Lady Knight Generator, so the result could look like any of these awesome characters, yet this artist’s first idea for “dragon armor” was the underbooby thing in the last image :-/

Oh boy, it’s what I’ve been dreading when the Soul Calibur VI character releases started; another uninspired lingerie-esque outfit for Ivy!
[ x5 ]
It’s so aggressively boring that the details they added, like the lace on her stockings and the cords around her sides, somehow make it even less interesting. She looks like she’s cosplaying herself. They also seem to have removed the snake motifs she had previously, and replaced them with… uhh, generic skulls, I guess? Cause that’s intimidating and not overdone at all.
[Ivy, thinking “What, you thought this was going to be a good design? Ha!” with a knowing smile]
I guess I’ll give the devs credit for giving her a boob window while also showing off about 70% of her breasts (the lace doesn’t count as covering). That’s some next-level dedication.
What is it with companies thinking that professional, Machiavellian female characters wear fetish outfits?

Star Sapphire in Justice League Doom

Wow. So she decided “I’m going to wear this pointless half-helmet that offers no protection, but I’m going to expose most of my upper torso, in a way which is hugely impractical for most mundane tasks let alone super-villainy”. Maybe she wants to show off her lack of bellybutton?
Star Sapphire basically never gets a break from godawful costume.
What upsets me the most is that animated adaptations usually veer on the safer (and less physically impossible) side of sexualized superheroine costumes (see: Angela and Dagger), thus old DC Animated Universe Star Sapphire just wore a leotard and thigh-high boots:
The Justice League Doom one is just… ugh.

Legion of Doom, more like Legion of Skin.
Nobody in this team has a bellybutton…
Also, apparently that purple star tattoo is where she stashed her powers. Observe.
Am I the only one weirded out by the casual way with which he just sticks his hand into another person? ( ಠ_ಠ) Not to mention, maybe put the crystal that holds all of your powers somewhere where a person can’t just grab it so easily. Then maybe she could wear a better outfit.

It’s time for Camilla from Fire Emblem to make another appearance.
She is given a promoted class in Fire Emblem Warriors with more cleavage. Apparently, she can be sexualized more, complete with “my eyes are up here.” Though unlike Fire Emblem Fates, she does remember to bring her axe and wyvern to her cut scenes in Fire Emblem Warriors, so silver lining.
Oh Camilla,.. it’s kind of amazing how much has and hasn’t changed since the last time you were given a bingo card. Mostly it just seems a few squares like Bared Belly have become ambiguous and more boob straps have been added.
They’ve also somehow managed to lean into the armor as sexy lingerie and remind you, in case you somehow forgot, that she has big boobs:
Her intro video also makes it far, far too clear to us that in her default (not bingo’d here) outfit she is not wearing a thong. I mean, I know it’s on the bingo card… but that level of clarity was really not necessary.

This is from a real video game called “Riders of Icarus” and this is what you see during the character select screen. Viewable on many Riders of Icarus review videos that go through character selection screens. These images were obtained from https://www.tentonhammer.com/guides/riders-of-icarus-choosing-a-class
Not only is the double standard very apparent, it’s also extremely inconsistent as well (and of course, 100% illogical because why would a woman wearing full plate reveal MORE than the assassin class??? On top of the, you know, why reveal anything dilemma).
Also, literal bikini armour. LITERAL bikini armour. I can’t…
(Order of classes from top to bottom in captions:
Guardian,
Assassin, Priest, Wizard, Berserker.)
This is the textbookiest of texbook examples of double standard in armor we’ve seen in ages. Amazingly creative!

I remember how Riders of Icarus released it’s trailer it almost looked like it wasn’t going to this nonsense… for a literal minute.
You have to love their commitment to the novel idea of wings combing out of the lower legs… then going with the most generically awful female costumes…. short skirts don’t really seem compatible with dragon riding.
For bonus points, this is the first female character you’ll come across on their site if you scroll down through the promo images from the top:

In case you thought Dahlia/Tsuki was the only problematic female character design in Xenoblade Chronicles 2… Here’s the game’s protagonist, Pyra, whose bizarre boobsocks became a meme in their own right!
Last horizontal image found on a forum where people are discussing whether or not her in-game model actually wears thong over those short shorts… Comparing it with concept art, it seems like that’s not the case, but boy does that Tracer-style deep buttcrack and shape of the belt (?) right above it make it look suspiciously a lot like thong.
The only positive surprise about that costume is how flat and wearable the heels of her shoes look! Despite which she still is constantly posed as if she was wearing heels two inch taller.
