Press Start is an immersive installation where the viewer takes the place of a character in a video game. Players are able to choose from one of three classes, view items in a shop, and interact with the shopkeeper. Each class has sets of armor and weapons specific to its trade, but there’s a catch: the items vary within class depending on gender. Video games are a huge part of popular culture with an equally split gender demographic, yet so many female characters are designed by and marketed to men. As a result, armor and weapon design for these characters becomes overly sexualized, impractical, and more often than not, both. Press Start humorously imposes these tropes on men, while also empowering women through practicality and representation within a medium.
