Tidy Up Tuesday #61

This week…

Marvel representative decided to blame the rich representation of new characters, particularly women, LGBTQ+ folk and people of color, in their superhero comics as a reason for their recent sales drop. They’re making a bold claim that it’s the readers and retailers who didn’t really want diversity.

A claim proven unsubstantiated by simply comparing sales numbers and business practices at Marvel in the last couple of months.

Incidentally, we discussed the potential of scapegoating the strive for diversity in media if said media is unsuccessful in our “Go make your own!” article

This week’s tidy-ups and announcements:

Big congrats to @wincenworks on the 3rd anniversary of becoming co-moderator! Thank you so much for helping me handle this blog and shape it into what it is today. Couldn’t have had a better collaborator!

Sorry for the holdup with addressing most frequent/topical requests! We’re receiving lots of interesting messages/submissions/@-notifications, often regarding the same matters. With amount of posts our private schedules can provide at the moment (1 a day) we don’t want to rush into queuing articles with little to no thought and research put into them.
Hopefully we’re manage to address most in-demand topics soon.

Tidying-up this week…

Since it is apparently a point of confusion to some – no, Overwatch doesn’t feature any black playable female characters. Not every dark skinned person of color is black.

A couple of issues to clear up this week:

Big thank you to everyone who sends new posts our way! Since we received a lot of first-time submissions lately, let us bring back the submission system instructions, which will hopefully make the process less confusing to the newcomers.

A few things to tidy up here, a lot of them having to do with For Honor

Since the armor is a bit complicated and there’s a lot of feedback, there will be at least one more post on the differences and design decisions.  It will take a little time to assemble though.

Firstly though, thank you for the many submissions we’ve been receiving lately, with our diminished posting schedule it’s hard to keep but we have some great user-submitted posts we want to share soon.

Back to For Honor (and other games): The world presented by the game devs is at least as much a part of the game as the player customization screen.

Gender select on most of the classes does not erase how the game itself presents gender such as, for example, refers to armies as “these men” or when the game presents suspicious dismorphism as standard.

Having a skin tone slider that allows your character to be the only brown person in the world (and somehow unnoticed for it) doesn’t make a game above criticism for diversity issues.

If you believe that cultural and ethnic diversity is a relatively new thing and so it’s fine when it’s absent in fantasy, then we strongly encourage you to check out the plethora of material available on @medievalpoc ( facebook | twitter )

If you would like to learn more about issues relating to diversity we strongly recommend checking out and supporting:

For other issues relating to feedback we’ve gotten on the For Honor posts, as I said a post is coming but some related posts are:

(And if you’re still stressing out, remember it is listed as a positive example, however we pointed out issues with it. BABD is a critic blog and no product is ever perfect. Not even our favourites.)

You may have noticed our posting schedule isn’t quite a regular as it used to be – that’s due to a combination of factors but in order to address it we’ll be aiming for one post per day for a while rather than our usual two.

We thank you for your understanding.

Been a while since we’ve done a tidy up.

We do try to keep our posts brief and primarily focus on costume and character design for female characters – since focusing on every aspect of many designs and companies could literally take pages and pages.

If you’re interested in other issues of representation we highly recommend checking out the following blogs:

We also recommend checking out our related sites.

A few things to tidy up this week:

Our tag cloud is courtesy of Post-Theory.

For those of you arguing that the guys in Final Fantasy XV are equally sexualized and objectified as Cindy: I hate to break it to you but you’re clearly getting it confused with Final Fantasy XIV.

If you have written an article, column, etc for somewhere else but you want to share it and you’re free to do you may absolutely submit it (or a link to the original publishing if it’s online and accessible).

This week:

Don’t forget to participate in our Overwatch Halloween costume design contest! The deadline is this Sunday, 20 November!

Fabulous prizes await!

Re: name dropping Dragon’s Crown as an example of a failed satire/commentary in the most recent throwback – the game’s art director admited his designs pushed for cartoonish exaggerations, implying it’s supposed to be a comedic take on the conventional fantasy character design.
