Tidy Up Tuesday #3

Back to some tidying-up this week.

We’ve been asked us about our policy on submitting someone else’s personal art that was published by the author on an art website.

We don’t use non-commercial art for negative examples, but may use personal works for positive examples, parody, commentary or other purposes.

This query is covered by our FAQ, so the long-time followers should know, but “That’s not technically an armor” is NOT a contributing comment on a Female Armor Bingo post or any post critical of a female warrior outfit.

Apparently the creators of the next Divinity game are open to fans suggesting improvements. recklessprudence asked us to do a shout-out to the requests against boobplates and high heels in female armor. Please vote on those threads!

Let it be known that the fan community doesn’t support the “Save the boobplate” attitude the game’s lead artist shown before.

Finally, some topics that we’ve previously addressed and received some queries about:

Tidy Up Tuesday #2.5

A few quick points this week.

Some people were concerned that David Sim, of Cerebus fame, has a reputation for misogyny – yes he does and we do not support his politics.  We do however find it worth noticing that even he saw major problems with bikini armor back in the 70s.

Once again, people have rushed to assure us someone told them SMITE is okay and not appropriative.  This time it’s the localization publisher and existing fanbase in China – that you can find someone to give it the thumbs up does not mean it doesn’t have a problem.  Particularly when the someone is a group who are apparently already largely unconcerned with the issue and/or stand to make money by giving you the thumbs up.

Due to time and resource constraints, we are unfortunately unable to offer critiques for personal works or projects.  The focus of the blog has always and will always be big commercial projects that get wide exposure because those are the projects who should know better and who do make big impacts.

We also had a query about whether we’re okay with sexy lady armor if the guys are similarly outfitted.  This depends on two criteria: Are they actually equally sexualized? And why are they all dressed like this?

edit: This post was unfortunately lost during the first time Ozzie retroactively numbered Tidy-Up Tuesdays, therefore it’s number is now 2.5

Tidy Up Tuesday #2

Just a quick tidy up this week.

Some titles we’ve been asked about that have been covered before:

And also… this very sexy piece of high fashion.

Our FAQ got an update over the weekend. A new question appeared and now all the questions are conveniently listed as links at the top of the subpage.

Dissolve magazine recently ran an excellent article, “We’re losing all our strong female characters to Trinity Syndrome”, which talks about the tendency to make a female character to be awesome right until the male protagonist arrives.

Tidy up Tuesday #1

As you can imagine we get a lot of requests, asks, submissions, etc that we don’t end up posting for one reason or another.  Often it’s because they’re regarding a topic we covered some time ago or something else takes priority – so now we’re going to try doing an additional post every week to just tidy up.

thegreatwidesomewhere is currently doing a research paper on sexism within the video games and how it effects female gamers.  She would love for some of our followers to contribute by filling out this short questionnaire.

monkeytights asked what armor can inspire Varric to flaunt his bare arms in Dragon Age Inquisition: You need to dress him in a heavy armor (which needs to be made using material that remove restrictions)

magical-girl-kickline asked if it’s okay to submit battle/action costumes that are not technically armor. So long as it’s a commercial production and it’s an outfit the female character is supposed to credibly fight in – we’ll certainly consider it provided it fits within our Submission Guidelines.

We’ve been asked if we can recommend some blogs that regularly post good armor, we have a list on the Related Sites Page.  It also covers similar sites like Escher Girls and The Hawkeye Initiative.  If you’re considering submitting something that is kind of what we post but different, we highly recommend checking the related sites page.

Also not directly related to BABD but still important: A Kickstarter called Invisibility Blues: Exploring Race in Video Games is in it’s final days – they’ve already met their goal and have set some great stretch goals.  I highly recommend checking them out and considering supporting if you are able.
