BABD Recommends – Game Mods Edition

While many major developers fall short on a regular basis, but thankfully there are people who work diligently to correct their shortfalls.  And here are the works of a few whom we particularly recommend.

Despite the many perils of looking through mod sites, and the things that I can never unsee, I still love modders and the way they allow players to adjust their own experience and add the kind of content they want to see.

Sadly due to the nature of systems involved, most of these are only available for PC only.

Dragon Age: Origins

Dragon Age 2

Dragon Age: Inquisition

Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Mass Effect 3

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

Have fun!

* This mod unfortunately had a “fair skinned” version added, which we do not recommend.  Just say “no” to white washing.

I’m so excited for this comic, but… boob window?????

Caveats: Boob window character is a mage, hot shirtless man also provided.

While I don’t work there or really know anyone who does, I sometimes feel like I can almost hear the discussions that must go on at Bioware with demands of Creepy Marketing Guy and then everyone else working out how to compensate for them.

In Dragon Age: Inquisition it seemed to be that they had to keep Morrigan’s original outfit (even though the concept art shows they had some amazing ideas) but we got wonderful takedowns on bikini armor and dashingly handsome male romance options.

In Magekiller it seems we’ll have to have booby evil mages:

And handsome male protagonist who walks around with his shirt off:

Since they have ditched the battle bikinis, I hope that one day soon we will see the day when Thedas’ morally questionable female mages get a less cliched outfits.

Started a second playthrough of Inquisition. Pretty early on I realize I have “special shipments” from the DLCs, and I figure hey, those are better than the armor I’ve got, I’ll wear them for a bit. Only…

SOLAS. WHAT ARE YOU WEARING?

… first of all, damn. Who knew he was that attractive under his apostate hobo garb?

Also:

OH MAN I HAVE TO PUT THAT ON EVERYONE.

THIS IS THE BEST THING EVER.

This was entirely, 100% necessary.

Clearly.

I hope @bikiniarmorbattledamage finds out about this

Okay, that outfit totally increases the replay value by 100%

Thank you for noting us about this, @bladetiger!

I only saw a small post about it so I thought I’d ask for a longer one: What do ya’ll think of Jack from Mass Effect. Compared to MOST of the females in that game is it right to say she isn’t sexualized?

Yes. No. I mean yes. Maybe.

Jack certainly is an example of a character where the core reason behind her exposure is largely explained by her desire to express non-conformity and brazen confidence.  She’s consistently portrayed as someone who has a grudge against society and it’s one of many ways she expresses contempt for it. Ironically the more sexualizing aspect is the straps that seem to have been added after the initial design, presumably because we need to protect people from the terror of nipples (by drawing more attention to their existence and further fetishizing them, isn’t society great?).

image

Unfortunately, when it came time for Mass Effect 3 – her costume seems to have been re-invented with similar focus on sexuality that Ashley’s was.

image

Overall, Jack in Mass Effect 2 was a fairly good use of non-sexual exposure, Jack in Mass Effect 3 less so.  How sexualized each was would be a complex discussion involving things like her looks, structure of Bioware’s romance system, camera angles, etc.

Not really something we can summarize in a blog post.

In comparison to other Mass Effect ladies – well she’s certainly better off (costume wise) than Samara!
