Vikings: War Of Clans

I can’t believe it’s not porn. It’s the advertisement for the latest strategy game Vikings;War Of Clans!

image

When I thinking Viking I think uncomfortable underwear. She has a good helmet, shame about everything else. I’m sure this will sell millions of copies, and certainly won’t be forgotten within a month.

Well, given it’s from the creators of Stormfall, Total Domination, Nords and of course Sparta: War of Empires (who had an affiliate actual steal images from a porn movie cover once) and include promotional imagery like this:

image

It’s not terribly surprising to discover that this image, which is hosted on a major affiliate networking site that makes bold promises:

image

Is actually fetish art, literally off deviantArt*, and the fetish in this case is highly sexualized female gladiators brutally killing each other.  This is apparently, a stock standard image that the affiliate site keeps on their servers just in case they get a client they think will match that.

I can’t be the only one who thinks this is all more than a little messed up that a major advertiser thinks this is a great generic fantasy game image. (I don’t even want to think how they found this image in the first place)

Looks like somebody searched the dA image category of “artistic nude.” Even if we’re stretching suspension of disbelief for the “almost naked gladiator fighters” trope, the design is just… boring. They didn’t even put in the minimal effort of giving her some kind of insignia or blood splatter or anything.

I was looking at a few upcoming PS4 games coming out this year and I saw this and found this character. Her name is Brunhilde and she is one of the main antagonists in the upcoming game called Valkyria Revolution. Can someone help me understand what am I looking at and why does this exists?

image

This pic above is a special pre-order image straight from SEGA. Yeah, I as soon I saw these I just had to submit it to BABD. First time doing this, so please tell me if I’m doing it right. Love all of the work you guys do and I hope more people stop designs like these from getting into media.

Sources( valkyria.wikia.com, theplatformer.net, www.segalization.com)

Well the main reason that it exists is that publishers and Creepy Marketing Guy really like this myth that sex sells, because well it’s essentially idea that there’s a magic,  shortcut and that that it happens to allow them to get work to pay for images that appeal to them personally (and may, if they’re lucky, make them temporarily popular with certain demographics).

The other big appeal, commercially, is that if you decide that generic softcore pinups are the precious commodity that will motivate your customer base – you’ve got a fairly low effort product in comparison to say unique designs that integrate into your product’s lore, a character’s individual personality, etc.

The ultimate form of this is, of course: The asset flip.

It’s just a shame that their the games industry can’t put more emphasis and faith into the actual game.

Bingo: Nowi from Fire Emblem Awakening

FEAnon submitted:

image

Nowi is a Manakete(Dragon in human form) from Fire Emblem Awakening. Nowi is a controversial character due to her skimpy outfit combined with her young age as a dragon as she is proportionately 14 at most, though the localization makes Nowi act more mature to downplay the controversy.

image

This is made much more controversial due to the player being encouraged to marry Nowi off to other units and have children which if spoofed in this webcomic. While Now is first encountered captured, it is revealed Nowi made the outfit herself and wears it of her free will.

image

A Male of the same race and class for comparison.

Anyone up for a bingo?

Bingo you say?

image

Now, of course, there’s the argument that I’m sure will be coming about it being her choice, or her being a dragon so she doesn’t need protection, yadda yadda yadda.

Ultimately though, it’s very simple: If the most creative approach someone can take to a character concept such as a dragon in human form and decide it’s a “get out of criticism free card” for a worryingly sexualized teenage girl – then it’s safe to say the fluff was never really a big concern to you.

We referenced AutoBattle once before, but didn’t get the opportunity to talk about their super creative

and totally equal

character and costume designs.

They broke a bingo, so they don’t get a Vegeta gif.

I’m so moved… the void of absolute fantasy genericness and blatant double standards that Spirit Stones left behind is filled at last!

Apparently that bingoed lady elf’s body, particularly the holes in her armor, were used as a backdrop on the game’s site [source].

So this ad popped up on my instagram. All I can say is… at least they acknowledged that the game is only geared towards heterosexual men?

I saw this on facebook. I’m not surprised, yet still disappointed.

Time to bingo that… thing.

At this point I’m so desensitized to random boobwindowy dress-lingerie-armor-thingies like this that I’m more distracted by her freakishly long legs than her boobs obviously slipping out in a second.

Settling for the next best thing.

As a blog focused on criticism, there’s something we come across regularly in responses to our writing – insistence that we’re “never happy” no matter how much better a particular example is than most media we feature on BABD.

Readers (though mostly detractors) question why we can’t qualify something (mostly games) as 100% positive example if it does one thing better than the rest in its medium/genre/etc.

Examples:

It’s quite disheartening to have the audience insist that we should settle for media to be tiny bit better than mediocre and call it a day. That a game or its creator not being as bad as they could deserve to be awarded and held up as an example for the rest of the industry.

image

We refuse to set our standards so low that “her battle costume isn’t a literal bikini” or “has characters who are female in it” or “shows a male butt/chest sometimes” qualify a title as good, equal gender representation with no room for improvement.

Being better than a random asset-flipping game with stolen artwork in their web ads isn’t hard. Being better than your last project and learning from its mistakes should be a given. Simply not making asinine excuses for poor representation shouldn’t be applauded.
No-one is asking for perfection, but all creators should be held accountable for the product they’re selling, with its good and bad sides.

Popular media, especially video games, has a huge problem with fan backlash against lesser-than excellent reviews scores*. And this is not much different – expecting negatives not to be acknowledged because positives exist.

BABD in particular, instead of doing comprehensive reviews, is focused on female costume and character design compared to male ones. Yet even such specific topic can’t be talked about from both angles without someone decrying unfairness.
Does it really say more about us being negative and cynical or the fans being entitled and blind to any challenging point of view?

I don’t know if you´re familiar with Japanese video games but it’s very rare to find a chubby character in a game, so today I want to talk about Shikiri Hasebe ( 長谷部しきり )

She is a character from しんけん!! (Shinken!!). Shinken!! is an online “Line Defense” web browser game developed by studio PROSPECT / PICTOGRAPH and published on DMM.com.

She is adorable!

She was featured in La Farfa magazine

Most female characters in videogames are usually slim and sexy, it’s refreshing to find a chubby character that is cute!!

Usually, female characters are ‘rescued‘… not the other way around haha.

THAT LAST PICTURE

I love her

!!!!! @bikiniarmorbattledamage you guys would enjoy this!!!

She’s so adorable and badass! Such a simple, yet inspired design.

Wonder why creators who are vocal about “just really liking girls” only ever make games about the same type of skinny “sexy” girl, when so much different body types, like short and chubby, get ignored.

Shikiri Hasebe stands for all the potential that is wasted when female characters aren’t allowed to represent all shapes and sizes in which real women come.
