So a friend recently asked me what I thought about this outfit:

I said that I dont understand the panties or the thigh-highs, or why she has random skin windows, or why she seems to have better protection on her forearms than her vitals, but aesthetically it’s nice.

What do you think?

When it comes to “reasoning” behind the costume’s skimpyness and random holes, I suppose the trite “Tamaraneans are solar powered” excuse is still canon. And still bullshit, as long as Star’s fellow solar-powered alien Superman doesn’t dress like this. Or that. Or THAT.

As far as official Starfire outfits go, this is maybe the second (non-cartoon) one I recall that actually looks wearable, which is a big plus, considering the alternatives:

Guess my standards for this character’s look are just ridiculously lowered at this point, but I really do think that new outfit is an improvement and hope Starfire doesn’t revert to some sort of impossi-bikini anytime soon.

So, following up on the outrage over “censoring” Skullgirls (six months after the fact) we now have the a new censorship scandal… censoring a not yet released Street Fighter V in a manner that we find truly hilarious.

As some of you may recall, some time ago we expressed some concerns with Rainbow Mika (R Mika)’s costume updates – and immediately had a horde descend to insist that it was totally legit, there is nothing sexualized about it it’s just wrestling and we’re complaining about nothing.

Now we have people rioting because it appears that her signature tag-team double butt attack animation has been altered!  Well right before beginning her mega attack, Mika does a little half-turn and smacks her butt with her hand… and now the camera doesn’t focus on her butt for that smack.

Yes, apparently these people are unsatisfied with only this much sexualization:

And they’ve decided they appropriate thing to do is not to respect the creator’s creative freedom of altering their own content – but rather to start a petition.  Oh there’s also some other minor changes (pretty much all camera angles) but the butt slap moment is the one specifically cited in the petition.

And of course, in the top comments of the petition is this gem:

I wasn’t keeping up with E3 but the Valkyrie from the Gauntlet game actually has practical armor???

bikiniarmorbattledamage:

Well, I’m a little disappointed that they seem to have gone with three men and a token woman approach (not that I had high hopes for Gauntlet – one of the original “kill everything that moves or doesn’t move” games), but looking at the most revealing outfit they’re showcasing for her:

I can’t stay mad at her… look at her!

Since it’s that time again where the popular rhetoric is “Why be so negative? Why not celebrate the improvements!?” I feel it’s time to bring this back.

If Arrowhead Game Studios (founded by students) can do this with Gauntlet, a franchise this is literally thirty years old, and has a questionable history in terms of costume design for Valkyrie, then I think I’m entitled to expect more from major studios.

So, the message to major studios that want praise for “trying to improve” while improving by only the slightest increments (followed by backsteps) remains the same:

The devs of skullgirls edited animations for two characters removing SOME panty shots – not all, not even most, just some. For two characters. Without any request, it was all decided on by the artists. So of course people would be for this, right? Artistic integrity!

Here are some of my favorite reactions from steam.

Again, all of this because less than twenty frames were slightly altered.

Whoa, wait a minute, does this mean that every time gamer dudes squealed and gibbered about how “artists should be able to do what they want without criticism,” they actually didn’t mean that at all!?!?

Oh the always-conveniently-mutable “creative freedom” vs. “censorship” argument…

As Jim Sterling aptly put it in his video about the matter:

Or is it only censorship when it’s people who aren’t you, and don’t think like you, getting what they want for once instead of you?

Personally my favourite part about this fiasco was this:

With examples: 1, 2, 3

And yes, it’s possible they play on platforms other than Steam – but it wouldn’t explain why it took until October for them to notice a change that was made with the April 18 patch (and discussed on the main forums here).
