is it possible to create an armor that fills all the squares of the bingo? i mean one of the squares is “thong” but then another of the squares is “no underwear.” is it possible to make an armor SO AWFUL that it managed to fulfill both??? you’d need some sort of weird armor that goes into the buttcrack but doesn’t actually connect into functional panties??? this is brain breaking…

The answer is: a definite and resounding… “maybe?” ^_^’
It really depends how much you want to stretch the definitions of every square’s trope. There’s purposely some room left for interpretation with those.

The example you give was actually achieved a couple of times, cause we tend to, exactly as you say, count all things that go into buttcrack as “thong”, no matter if they look like panties or not (see, for example: the latest bingo).
Not sure about wincenworks, but I’m also pretty generous with “no underwear” square, cause lots of those things just don’t look like wearable bras/panties to me (and, you know, rarely actually go UNDER the rest of the costume).

Still, I made the bingo as a collection of the worst and most pervasive problems I noticed in female “warrior” costume design, it was never really supposed to be 100% full (and thankfully, never got to it).

But now, as we’re all in on the joke, we’re having some fun with the idea, cause why not. Stretching the boundaries of ridiculousness is the purpose of our Break the Bingo contest!

Before the Bingo Sunday starts as usual, just a quick note:

While Female Armor Bingo is free to use for its intended purposes and you’re all encouraged to share your completed bingos – the bingo card design is not to be reposted on other sites or repurposed for other bingos.

Bikini Armor Battle Damage certainly supports people making their own designs for similarly intended bingos (like the Male Protagonist Bingo the EscherGirls Bingo) but asks that you do your own design work.

YES, guys, we know of the new Oglaf comic. No need to send us more messages. We’ll be queueing it for sometime later in the coming week.

It so happens that both of us (but wincenworks especially) are big Oglaf fans, so it’s kinda ironic we tend to get lots of messages whenever a strip about sexy armor is made. Chances are, we’ve already read it, so please keep that in mind next time. Thanks for heads up, anyway!

Well we don’t really, these concerns are covered in the FAQ but since we’re still getting the outrage for our noble work – let’s have some fun!

Firstly I (the straight cis man known as wincenworks) love the assumption that it’s only women who are enjoying our Sexy Male Armor Fridays because a fairly hefty proportion of them are made by and for gay or otherwise queer men.  It actually takes quite a bit of work to find them even on video game mod sites and art sites.

Meanwhile all I have to do to see women being objectified is open up Steam or visit my local comic book shop.  It’s everywhere. In everything. It’s the predominant image of heroines and strong female characters.

So to answer your question, when we ever start to reach a reality where male characters aren’t considered worthwhile unless they conform to a very narrow beauty standard then we can start worrying about objectification of men.  If that ever happens and isn’t immediately backpedaled over.

And now for our second concerned citizen! Sorry I forgot who you are too.

I can only assume this refers to one or more of the many “empowered” jokes that we make both on sexy male armor posts and others.  This because the fallacy that it is somehow a power fantasy for women to conform to ridiculously demanding and implausible beauty standards.

High heels, thongs, push-up bras the flaunt cleavage, bared belly buttons and bedroom eyes often aren’t even used to to signal heightened sexuality in a female character – they’re just there as some sort of a “be sexy so boys will like you, remember you’re empowered” uniform. The top priority is still making straight men feel the character is made for them in particular.

Various media love spins of trying to excuse hypersexualizing women such as weaponized femininity,  "she’s so powerful“ and a whole bunch of other things.  But very rarely does it have anything to do female characters actually having power, doing what they want and not conforming to society’s demanding expectations.

James Bond gets to be powerful, sexy and use his sexual appeal to get what he wants too.  But he also gets to do it while wearing awesome suits,having a charming personality and doing lots of things just because he wants to (as well as his super cool job).  Not many female characters get this kind of opportunity.

So really it’s not that there’s not a relationship between sex and power, it’s just there’s a very limited relationship between hypersexualized female armor and power.

PSA: don’t be that guy

Considering BABD has been around for over 20 months now and there are 94 pages (940 posts) of content on it as of today, chances are that if we post a thing, we know what we’re talking about and did at least minimal research into it.

If you feel the urge to correct us about something or add some unmentioned details about the subject of a BABD post, do YOUR research first and check if it happens that we touched upon it before.
Do not reblog or message us BEFORE you make sure that we don’t know the thing already. Maybe we noted the detail in question on other occasion and just don’t want to be redundant?
We’re not always 100% accurate and say everything that can be said on the matter at hand, but to assume we’re uninformed without checking it is pretty rude. Just don’t be that guy.

There is a reason we’ve been adding the “more on X” links at the bottoms of our posts: to show that we talked about the subject before or found some additional resources on it, so everything’s right there for the reference.

My favorite example of this is when people try to invoke this guy as their ultimate trump card of “Men are objectified in video games too!”

The ultimate steroid rager who converses primarily by screaming and murdering.  A completely selfish man who, since murdering his wife and daughter, seems to only one emotion (anger) and prone to random acts of violence.  A man so terrible that he goes out of his way to incorporate murdering random women* into “puzzle solving”.**

People actually point to this character, created by a man (David Jaffe) and try to tell us this is objectification of men in order to pander to women.  

Then, presumably, after throwing a tantrum and destroying random objects in their home, then wonder why women aren’t impressed by this and find them undateable.

* The fact that almost the entire female population, including the monsters, goes to great pains to show off their breasts to the player also never seems to factor into their assessment.

** This sequence featured in Tropes vs Women in Video Games – however please be advised that this sequence along with other parts in the video contain extreme depictions of violence against women. (x)

A note about Female Armor Bingo Sundays

We have previously updated some bingos after they have been posted, however we will not be doing this unless there is an important reason.

Here’s why:

  • Female Armor Bingo is intended as a fun way to encourage critique of popular media and thus draw attention to troubling tropes. Too much pressure to make every bingo perfect takes away the fun and derails the conversation away from the intended purpose.
  • Many of the terms are deliberately vague so as to cover the many forms the trope takes and thus it can become very subjective.
    Nitpicking over details again derails and also encourages the mentality that “No one can criticize you for x, provided you do y.”
  • When people submit bingo cards to us, they’re marking off the points they see – if they miss a point or two on a card that’s already over half full then it doesn’t really diminish from the core point: The armor is disrespectful to women in general and part of a prevalent and harmful trope.
  • Sadly, Female Armor Bingo is not an empirical measuring device – we’ve had absurdly objectifying outfits that didn’t score bingos either due to technicalities or how the squares happened to be filled out. They were still objectifying and deserving ridicule.
    Just like the famous Bechdel Test, the bingo is supposed to shed light on a bigger trend in popculture, not to meticulously analyze who and what “passes”.
  • Finding new content for the blog, checking submissions, researching and writing posts, etc. is time consuming and a much higher priority than tweaking bingos that are already entertaining and on-point.

While it’s great fun to joke about the exact score and keep a tally of the highest scoring bingos it’s not essential for every bingo to be 100% accurate and correct.
So from now on we’ll be limiting edits after posting to important and noteworthy events – like that time we discover that against all odds, Fran’s outfit was worse than we dreamed.

Hey! I came here to ask for your help. I recently had a discussion about female armour in video games with a male friend. The thing is, while i tried to convince him about how it was sexist and fucked up in so many levels, he said a lot of stuff like: Most of these are from oriental games, only men play video games in asia, sexy women sells because mostly men are buying. I want to know what I could say against that, because I know it doesn’t make it ‘okay’. Thank you <3

Okay… wow at your friend’s assumptions… this is going to take a while.

Firstly and foremost, there is a reason why Ozzie put “She was designed in a country where sexualization is cultural!” prominently on the Female Armor Rhetoric Bingo card.   Actually there are two good reasons:

  1. Local cultural differences don’t excuse how you treat roughly half the population of the world.  Objectifying people is not about sexual expression within your culture, it’s about reducing them down to something less than human.  
  2. The vast majority of people who make this claim don’t know anything at all about the region they’re referring to and are just outright spreading ignorance.

So, with that second point particularly in mind… let’s move on to:

“in Asia…”

Any time you hear someone try to use the justification of cultural differences with “Asia”, you should remind them (violently if necessary) that Asia is not:

  • A culture
  • A country
  • A hivemind
  • A magical wonderland where the rules of reality are suspended and hence things happen with no explanation

Asia is a collection of countries which all have their own cultures and values.  Those cultures are always evolving and the values vary from individual to individual (the individuals also grow – they are people after all).

Often, when people talk about “Asia” (or Asian video games) they mean Japan and/or South Korea. To claim that women in these areas don’t play video games is completely absurd.  I mean lets look at some photos of gaming Internet Cafes in South Korea… notice something?

Japan actually has a whole genre of games which are heavily targets at women, Otome.  It is a thriving genre, the same company that makes action games like Dynasty Warriors also makes otome games (along with like fifteen other major companies). It’s also the home of Nintendo – the company that produces gender progressive games like Pokemon.  Japan is also the home of Square Enix, the creators of the famous Final Fantasy – a game with a massive female fan base if ever there was one.

After we received this ask, I messaged a female friend in the South East Asia region over Steam and asked if she thought there was any truth to your male friend’s idea.  Her response:

“only men play video games in asia???

plenty of females play video games in asia. at least half of my friends do. and they’re not just homely wallflowers either”

(After this we discussed what a seriously hot and awesome cousin-in-law my friend has.  It’s not really relevant to games, but her cousin-in-law is awesome… and hot.)

This is not to say that any of these nations are some sort of post-sexism gaming wonderland. Rather that it’s fairly safe to say that the blanket notion of women in Asia don’t play games is just absolutely ridiculous. So on to…

“Most of these are from Oriental games”

Some of the games with terrifying female armor are made primarily in Asia. Some of them are made primarily in the western world. Many of them are made collaboratively and ALL of them are made for the global marketplace.

There are numerous games made in one region with the story based on culture or region of another, stories of how games had to be modified for different markets, etc.  Game companies have been marketing to the world at large for a long, long time.

Due to the increases in customer expectations and the need for broader markets, many  MMOs now involve partnered companies from multiple regions.  AAA games developers now frequently outsource large parts of projects to studios around the world.  

To further confuse things: The Japanese company Square Enix owns several games studios based in and found in Europe.

The line between “Asian” or “western” games on in the marketplace has been really blurry for a long time.

“sexy women sells because mostly men are buying”

If there is one thing I’m sure of, it’s that sex doesn’t sell (unless you’re selling sex).  

There’s seriously no history, precedents or market research to suggest trying to sex up your game has ever helped sales.  It’s just something people do because they want to believe there’s an easy way to get sales.

Bayonetta marketed heavily on sex appeal in order to try to expand from the audience of those who liked the Devil May Cry franchise and ultimately sold less copies.

Duke Nukem Forever heavily marketed it’s own crass version of sex sells… it didn’t impress anyone or help save it from being a dire warning on how not to make video games.

The Dead or Alive franchise invested in the “sex sells” approach with not one, but three “extreme beach volleyball” games.  After all that pandering, the franchise still has no advantage over it’s competitors and struggles to meet it’s (relatively modest) sales goals.

None of these games sales figures can compare in the slightest to Minecraft’s selling over 49 million copies or Call of Duty 2: Modern Warfare selling over 28.5 million.

Even the undeniably vulgar Grand Theft Auto 5, which sold over 32 million copies, didn’t rely on sex to sell it’s product.  Instead the vast majority of the marketing was focused on the three main protagonists and the franchise it belonged to.

All of which is to say that if it were just cultural differences, these games wouldn’t become mainstream titles in the English speaking world.  They’re mainstream titles because lots of people in the western world buy them.
