Tidy up Tuesday #1

As you can imagine we get a lot of requests, asks, submissions, etc that we don’t end up posting for one reason or another.  Often it’s because they’re regarding a topic we covered some time ago or something else takes priority – so now we’re going to try doing an additional post every week to just tidy up.

thegreatwidesomewhere is currently doing a research paper on sexism within the video games and how it effects female gamers.  She would love for some of our followers to contribute by filling out this short questionnaire.

monkeytights asked what armor can inspire Varric to flaunt his bare arms in Dragon Age Inquisition: You need to dress him in a heavy armor (which needs to be made using material that remove restrictions)

magical-girl-kickline asked if it’s okay to submit battle/action costumes that are not technically armor. So long as it’s a commercial production and it’s an outfit the female character is supposed to credibly fight in – we’ll certainly consider it provided it fits within our Submission Guidelines.

We’ve been asked if we can recommend some blogs that regularly post good armor, we have a list on the Related Sites Page.  It also covers similar sites like Escher Girls and The Hawkeye Initiative.  If you’re considering submitting something that is kind of what we post but different, we highly recommend checking the related sites page.

Also not directly related to BABD but still important: A Kickstarter called Invisibility Blues: Exploring Race in Video Games is in it’s final days – they’ve already met their goal and have set some great stretch goals.  I highly recommend checking them out and considering supporting if you are able.

Armor from Dragon Age 2

As lots of our posts pointed out already, elements of good armor are basically always the same, no matter the wearer’s gender and body parts.

And this here handy graphic on the left* is no different from any similar we featured before that showed a (presumably) male model wearing plate.

*Though honestly I’m a bit disappointed how painted-on the under-armor looks in the picture on the left. And how because of that I can’t tell if there’s supposed to be some other protective layer (maybe gambeson?) beneath it.

While the armor was a bit thing, I was exceptionally happy with how they took the simple concept of making warrior armor “heavier” by simply adding more protective layers on top of basic armor.

It’s more or less how most heavy armor has worked throughout history and cultures.

Things assholes say to defend shitty female armor

cuppykin:

-“She chooses to dress that way!”
-“It’s fantasy, get over it!”
-“I’m a girl and it doesn’t bother me!”
-“You see from her lore she doesn’t need protection because as an all powerful being of magic she…”
-“Conan the barbarian!”
-“If you don’t like it make your own content!”
-“I guess nobody can be creative any more!”

Sindell from Mortal Kombat is supposed to be a mystical queen of another world, yet has always been depicted as well, let’s just say “empowerment” isn’t the first thing that comes to mind.  Particularly whens he’s on screen with other women from the series:

So, now that Mortal Kombat is blaming their own characters for the attire that the dev team put them in, and Sindel is supposed to be scarier than ever before (now that she’s once again an NPC). How do you suppose they decided to change her look for Mortal Kombat X?

I have to admit I’m kind of surprised they thought to add those straps to answer the question of “how does it attach”, though this is not the kind of progress that I consider worth celebrating.
